Retainers

After braces, what comes next? A retainer in San Antonio, TX!

They help your teeth maintain their new positions so that you can enjoy your smile for years to come.

Whether you need braces first or you want a replacement retainer, Drs. Andrew Ray and Richard D. Hulme can help.

The Importance of Wearing a Retainer

When it comes to straightening your teeth, braces or Invisalign® are only a part of the process. Options like clear retainers and permanent retainers allow you to maintain your orthodontic results. That's because they keep your teeth from shifting back into their misaligned positions.

You don't just need to wear a retainer right after treatment; you need to wear it consistently for the rest of your life. Typically, our San Antonio patients should put in their retainers every night. This keeps your teeth from shifting over time—and it can prevent you from needing orthodontic treatment again. We also offer permanent retainers, which are bonded to your teeth.

How Often Should I Replace My Retainer?

We design retainers for durability, but they cannot last forever. Removable retainers like clear retainers will need replacement after about 5-10 years. Permanent retainers can last up to 20 years but will also have to be replaced eventually.

You can help your retainer last longer by storing it safely when not in use and by cleaning it with cool water only.

First impressions are long lasting. I really appreciate that they acknowledge my son’s anxiety of the unfamiliar. They built that connection with him making him feel comfortable. Not only does it make me good about the initial appointment but also the journey that lies ahead.
