Invisalign

If the idea of metal braces doesn't appeal to you, Invisalign® clear aligners offer a more discreet orthodontic option.

Board-certified orthodontist Richard D. Hulme is a Diamond Plus Invisalign Provider, the top status an orthodontist can reach. Learn why patients and families trust Hulme Orthodontics for Invisalign in San Antonio, TX.

The Benefits of Invisalign

Instead of the metal brackets and wires used in traditional braces, the Invisalign system uses a series of clear, removable, custom-made aligners to straighten the teeth. Dentists and orthodontists recommend Invisalign because the aligners offer patients several advantages, including:

Virtually Invisible Aligners

Invisalign aligners are custom-made to fit snugly against your teeth, so they will feel as natural as they look. Because they are made with clear plastic, your coworkers, classmates, and peers will hardly notice you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. The same can't be said for braces.

Comfortable Choice

While metal brackets and wires on braces can irritate the soft tissues of your mouth, Invisalign aligners have smooth, form-fitting surfaces. There is less risk of injury or irritation to the gums or lips, and they are a great option for teens who play contact sports.

Completely Removable

One of the reasons we recommend Invisalign is its removable trays. While brackets and wires on braces make proper brushing and flossing difficult, Invisalign allows you to maintain good oral hygiene throughout your treatment plan. The aligners require no extra hassle or special tools.

No Dietary Restrictions

Because the trays can be removed when eating or drinking, there are no dietary restrictions when you use clear aligners to straighten your teeth. Patients can continue to enjoy all types of foods during treatment. However, be sure you only drink water when wearing your aligners.

The Cost of Your Treatment

Invisalign in San Antonio, TX

The cost of your Invisalign treatment will depend on the severity of your misalignment. Typically, the more aligners you need, the higher your total cost will be, but your treatment can range from $1,700 for minor single-arch corrections to $8,000 for complex cases. We do everything we can to make treatment more affordable by accepting:

Dental Insurance

Orthodontic treatments like Invisalign are often at least partially covered by insurance, as they help prevent oral health concerns like gum disease and tooth decay. We accept most dental insurance plans and can help maximize your coverage.

Third-Party Financing

For any out-of-pocket costs, you can apply for financing through CareCredit®. This third-party lender allows patients who qualify to pay for their care in low or no interest monthly payments.

In-House Financing

Our San Antonio offices also offer an in-house six-month interest-free financing plan.

Clear Aligners Correct Many Conditions

The Invisalign system can be used to correct mild-to-moderate alignment issues, including:

Overbite

An overbite can leave your front teeth exposed to chipping and affect your speech.

Underbite

Underbites can undermine your ability to properly chew food and pronounce certain words.

Gapped Teeth

Gapped teeth can leave you feeling self-conscious about speaking or smiling.

Open Bite

An open bite refers to teeth that are splayed out and don't touch one another. This can make it difficult to eat and enunciate.

Overcrowding

Crooked or crowded teeth make it easier for food to become trapped, increasing your risk of cavities and gum disease.

Crossbite

Crossbites can cause jaw pain when your upper and lower teeth attempt to properly realign.

A Twisted or Jutted Tooth

If you have a tooth or teeth that are twisted or jutting out, Invisalign can be used to improve alignment.

Millions of Teens & Adults Have Benefited From This Treatment Option

Worried that you won't qualify for Invisalign? You may think your orthodontic case is too complicated for Invisalign treatment, but clear aligners are becoming just as accessible as braces for many patients.

Invisalign has helped over 18 million patients, including 5 million teens, achieve straighter smiles.

Choose Invisalign If You...

Value Discretion

Adults and teens typically favor Invisalign because it is much less noticeable than traditional metal braces. They can feel confident as they undergo treatment.

Are Committed to Treatment

For clear aligners to do their job, they need to be worn at least 20 to 22 hours each day. You must be able to remember and commit to wearing your aligners at all times, except when cleaning them, eating, or drinking anything other than water.

Don't Smoke

The aligners need to be removed when smoking, so this option isn't ideal for people who smoke. Additionally, tobacco products are bad for your oral health and can lead to problems like gum disease and decay. We recommend kicking the habit before investing in your smile.

Invisalign Is Not for Everyone

Although clear aligners can correct many types of misalignment, it is important to note that severe issues may require braces.

During a free consultation at our San Antonio practice, your orthodontist will perform a thorough smile assessment to determine which approach is best for your dental needs. If he believes that braces are the most appropriate treatment, you may still qualify for clear ceramic braces that are far less noticeable than metal brackets and wires.

The Treatment Process

Each patient's treatment timeline is unique. Some patients may only require a few months of treatment, while others may need 18 months to achieve a straight smile. During a consultation at our San Antonio practice, we can provide you with an estimate of how long your treatment will take. In general, you can expect:

With board-certified orthodontic specialists like Dr. Hulme and Dr. Ray, you can experience outstanding results.
With board-certified orthodontic specialists like Dr. Hulme and Dr. Ray, you can experience outstanding results.

The Consultation

During your consultation, you will meet directly with one of our orthodontists. They will use advanced digital imaging and X-ray technology to develop your treatment plan.

Fabrication of the Aligners

Your treatment plan will be sent to an Invisalign lab so each aligner can be crafted to the precise specifications required to gradually move your teeth into alignment.

Starting Treatment

When your aligners are ready, which typically takes a few weeks, you will return to one of our offices to try on your first set. Your doctor will review any instructions with you, and then treatment can begin.

Switching to New Aligners

Depending on your treatment plan, you will switch out your aligners every one or two weeks. This process will continue until you have progressed through your treatment plan.

Routine Checkups

Every month or two, you will return to one of our offices serving San Antonio for quick checkup appointments. During these visits, your doctor will monitor your progress and address any concerns you may have.

Completing Treatment

When treatment is complete, you can enjoy the full results of your beautiful new smile. Some patients also opt to undergo complementary dental treatments, such as teeth whitening, with their primary dentist.

How to Have a Successful Treatment

Maintain Good Oral Health

Bacteria and food debris can get trapped under your clear aligners during use. Brushing and flossing after you eat is essential for the health of your teeth and gums. Don't forget to clean your aligners, too.

Record Your Daily Use

Keep track of how long you wear your aligners every day. The time you spend eating and drinking beverages other than water can add up quickly. To get the most out of your treatment with Invisalign, you should make sure you're wearing your clear aligners for the required 20 to 22 hours.

Be Mindful of What You Drink

You should only drink nonsparkling water while wearing your aligners. Drinking acidic, sugary, and dark-colored liquids while wearing your aligners can stain them. It can also hold sugar and acids against your teeth for long periods of time. Hot beverages can warp your aligners.

Attend Routine Checkups

Your orthodontists will schedule regular checkups every one to two months during your Invisalign treatment. During these visits, we will monitor your progress and make sure your teeth are shifting as intended. This is also an opportunity to address any issues that may come up and make adjustments as needed.

Maintaining the Results of Treatment

To maintain your results, you will need to wear a retainer day and night for a period after completing Invisalign treatment, and then at night for a lifetime. We will provide instructions regarding proper retainer use.

Failure to wear your retainer as directed can result in your teeth shifting back into their old, misaligned positions. Be sure to protect your investment by wearing your retainer, which may simply be the last set of aligners in your treatment plan.

This patient wore braces 10 years ago, but lost her retainer and noticed her teeth had shifted as a result. Using Invisalign Express, we were able to straighten her teeth in less than a year. She is thrilled with her results and is dedicated to preserving them with her new retainer.

Fast-Track Your Invisalign Treatment

With Invisalign Express

Instead of the typical treatment process in which patients wear a new aligner about every two weeks, our orthodontist may recommend a special approach that involves wearing each aligner for only a week. The main purpose of this approach is to take you about 80 percent of the way to ideal alignment in about half the normal treatment time. The remaining treatment timeline can be focused on fine-tuning your smile for the best possible results. This approach is far more comfortable, but it produces the same great result.

FAQ About Invisalign

Is there an age limit for Invisalign?

It is never too late to straighten your smile with Invisalign in San Antonio. There is no age limit for Invisalign treatment.

Can my child undergo Invisalign treatment?

While there is no set age minimum for Invisalign treatment, patients must be responsible enough to wear and maintain their aligners. We may recommend braces for children and patients who could have a hard time remembering to wear their aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day.

How do I clean my aligners?

Use a soft bristle toothbrush and mild soap to clean your aligners. Each time you remove your aligner trays, be sure to at least rinse them with cool or warm water before putting them back in your mouth. Do not use hot water or abrasive toothpaste on the aligners, as this can cause damage. Be sure to brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day as well.

I'm not a candidate for Invisalign. Do you have other discreet options?

Yes. If you're not a candidate for Invisalign but you'd prefer to undergo orthodontic treatment without drawing attention to it, we may recommend clear braces. With this option, our orthodontists can apply tooth-colored brackets to your teeth and use a clear archwire to straighten mild-to-moderate cases of misalignment. However, patients with severe or complex misalignment should receive metal braces.
